AHWATUKEE – Walking through the front doors of Hurricane Grill and Wings’ newest Phoenix location is like stepping out onto a beach that lines Florida’s coast.

Although technically there is no sandy beach, you will see circular orange floatation rings on the wall, brightly-colored surfboard tables, beach-themed wooden signs, and a large shack that houses the bar. The dining room is very bright–from the multicolored chairs to the white-and-blue wooden paneling that lines the restaurant–but in a way that makes you feel like you’re on vacation.

Careful, you may not want to leave.

It brands itself as a wings place–as its name implies–but it boasts a typical American-style menu: wings, fried pickles, burgers, salads, and steaks.

Guests will find over 35 flavors for wings, including signature sauces like Raspberry Ice, Garlic Parmesan and Ancho Chile Lime. It also has dry rubs, like blackened Cajun, Smokey mesquite, Habanero lime or the trifecta, which combines all three.

Tied to its Florida roots, the restaurant menu has seafood dishes, including grilled shrimp, grilled Mahi and fish and chips.

General Manager Todd Gadow said the restaurant will cater to families looking to go out to eat, as well as to the sports guys looking to catch the game on one of their 12 flat-screen TVs.

“This is a place you come to have fun at,” said Gadow.

The ceilings are high and the flooring has the look of smooth concrete so sound travels easily. I noticed a bit of an echo from various conversations between the 15 or so employees who were there for a “soft” opening. It is worth noting that as the place fills up, it has the potential to appear louder than it is.

This is the second location in Arizona; the first one is located in Surprise and opened five years ago. This newest location is in Chandler along Interstate 10 and Chandler Boulevard.

It will celebrate its grand opening on Monday, Oct. 27.

The restaurant is next to a building complex, a hotel and a Denny’s. The parking lot butts up to Chandler Boulevard, but the entrance into the complex comes up quick so you may miss it on your first trip out.

The bar area has an Island theme and is well-lit by four huge skylights. You look outside almost expecting to see the ocean, but will soon realize lakes are scarce in the desert.

Appetizers range in price from $4.99 for chips and salsa to $11.99 for “The Perfect Storm” which has Firecracker Shrimp, fried pickles, boneless wings and garlic and parmesan fries. Entrees fare between $9.99 – $13.99.

Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. That features drink specials and $5 appetizers. The bar features normal domestics, as well as local brews by Four Peaks and San Tan brewing companies.

The restaurant chain, which launched its flagship restaurant in April 1995, is in the process of building five more locations around the Valley. Specific locations weren’t known, but Gadow said the company has scouted locations in Scottsdale and Tempe. View website for info: .

The bone-in wings were meaty and a good size. The Gold Rush is a nice mix of honey mustard and a kick of buffalo sauce. The Parmesan Garlic is delicious if you want more flavor, than heat. Overall, the restaurant has the potential to bring something different to the area. It’s exact location is slightly off the main path, but not enough to deter customers.
